If you’ve considered making a healthy lifestyle change, you know that it can be incredibly intimidating and overwhelming. There’s wide variation between different viewpoints of what being healthy actually is, and which steps you should be taking to get there. When I started trying to eat cleaner, I was worried that I wouldn’t be doing it right. Was I supposed to buy organic? Non GMO? Should I be vegan/gluten free/Paleo? Will this be affordable? Easy?

Eating Clean is for Hipster Douchebags

Have you ever felt like this is true? I know I did! Even just the words “clean eating” were off putting and terrible. Pictures danced in my mind of impossibly thin yoga babes munching on kale and looking down their pretty noses at me for not buying Organic. As a (Self-proclaimed) “cool girl” I felt like eating in this way would somehow strip me of my edge or make me less authentic. After all I was a pizza eating, down to Earth gal who liked to swear and tell bad jokes. I had an image to uphold!

But the truth was that I actually was just misinformed about what clean eating is. And this is because clean eating as a statement has become an incredibly polarizing buzzphrase. I even did a whole write up on this.

However it’s really not that complicated. If you’re trying to incorporate more fresh foods into your diet you are trying to eat cleaner! If you are trying to buy organic, non GMO etc. etc. than you are trying to eat cleaner. If you are trying to reduce your consumption of commercially produced items and replace them with super easy alternatives made from fresher natural ingredients than you are trying to eat cleaner. Damn, if you even are trying to do this like 5% of the time then you are trying to eat cleaner.

How to Eat Healthier

Its easy! Do what works for you.

Like most things in life we seem to try and complicate things with rules, and standards and “should haves”. There are a million reasons why many diets can be considered good for you, or come highly recommended, or will bring great results. But I’ll tell you one thing, if something is not affordable, exciting and EASY to do (where my lazy people at?) then it wont get done. Period.

So how about we let go of the judgement and rules, Ok? Until even the smallest steps towards embracing a healthier lifestyle are celebrated as BIG WINS instead of “not good enough”, a lot of people will be put off by the prospect of making any steps at all. Instead of seeing steps towards a healthier life as a platform too short to reach our goals “properly”, lets see them as ladder rungs that are taking us in the right direction. Even if we don’t reach our goals we are higher than we started.

So eat your veggies people. Let your heart, wallet or head guide you, but for fuck sakes just try and do what works for you, and leave the rules to the boring rule people.

Clean Eating Should be Accessible to everyone

Let’s start celebrating progress instead of shitting on people’s individual choices. Its ridiculous that this is even a topic of discussion in the modern age. Food should be food, end of story! So let’s turn healthy living and “clean eating” into a completely APPROACHABLE thing.

I love this take on the misconception of clean eating. Very eloquently written. I shared it on G+ so far.

Thank you so much! I was really scared of it for so long and it really is such an ambiguous term. I think a more laid back approach is definitely required!
