When my husband and I started getting into this whole “born again hippy” shit, we started to really side eye some of the products lurking around our household.
Pretty much all of our cleaners were made of super harsh chemicals, and given the fact that we have small children it was kind of a no brainer that tackling these would be one of the first steps we would take on the path of natural living. Additionally, as frugal people we really loved the fact that most DIY household cleaners use simple, cost effective household items.

Now, given the fact that we are frugal, we didn’t just rush out and turf all of our cleaners. We used what we had until they ran out and during that time we prepared ourselves for making more. I get that we’re all trying to be healthier, but seriously you gotta have balance! The first thing that we did was start to make our own basic cleaner out of vinegar and citrus fruits.
To do this, we put citrus peels into mason jars full of vinegar and let them sit for about three weeks. After this time, we had an all natural all purpose cleaner that was all ready to go.
I know that some people might wonder about the efficacy of natural items such as vinegar and baking soda etc. to adequately clean items. There was a time I would have as well. However, my career in social work has shown me that many health care settings use these cleaners especially around vulnerable persons who might be at high risk of ingesting them, even while adhering to strict licensing and accreditation standards.
Now, I’m super lucky as I have an amazing friend who is a natural living and homemade cleaner Goddess. I was so lucky to have her come over and school me on making some natural cleaners.
I mean seriously, just check this out!
