I love spice. Salsa, Sriracha, hot sauce- it’s ALL good. I’ve found eating healthy to be super easy if what I’m eating is bursting with flavour. Probably why I have Mexican Inspired dishes multiple times a week.
Since the taco seasonings in the store are so full of salt (and sometimes sugar) we have started to make our own spice mixture to add to veggies, taco fillings, chili and to use as a spice rub. It became pretty clear that we were using pretty much the same spice for all of these things so we decided to make a big old batch so that we could save even more time in the kitchen.
This is the mixture that we’ve been using but I urge you to play around with it. The mixture I am about to list here is fiery hot!! We omit or only use a wee pinch when feeding the Littles.
Beyond the Taco Multipurpose Seasoning
You will definitely want to play around with this list. We use this combination because I find that it works well for Tacos, Fajitas AND chili. Being a true lazy girl I want ONE SPICE TO RULE THEM ALL.
- 2 cups chili powder
- 1.5 cups cumin
- 2 tbsp Oregano
- 2 tbsp Garlic Salt
- 1/2-1 tbsp Paprika
- 1 tbsp Cayenne (be warned, its spicy!) *optional
Add all spices to a large container and shake up. Easy peasy!
Ideas for this Spice Blend
This is no ordinary taco spice mix. It is amazing for quesadillas, chili, taco filling, and burrito bowls!
We also use it to make a really amazing spice rub. Since we have started eating less meat, we can take a single steak or piece of chicken and use it as garnish for different dishes. For burrito bowls we make the following spice rub, coat the meat and cook or BBQ.
Beyond the Taco Spice Rub
To make a spice rub with this seasoning blend just take 2-3 tbsps of the spice blend and add enough lime juice to make a paste (Approx. 1-2 tbsp). mix and use to coat. Cook/grill or BBQ for best results!
