Staying healthy on an average day is a fucking struggle. Add in the holidays and you are royally screwed. For some reason our society revolves around food, food, and more food! In the holiday season this is doubly true but also adds a hefty dose of sugar on top.

This, in combination with all the hectic craziness and familial obligations we have during the holiday season, is why many of us “fall off the wagon” with our health goals. However this doesn’t need to be the case! Here are some tips to keep you in that healthy groove, holidays be damned!

Buddy up

I’m going to hit you with a truth bomb right here- NOBODY cares about your diet. Don’t be that guy that talks about their daily food regimen with anyone who will listen. Get yourself an accountability partner who is also trying to stay healthy during the holidays and share your tips, struggles and wins with them.

Bring Snacks

Most of the social events during the holidays involve food, especially treats and diabolically tempting baked goods. Bring a plate of your own lightened up cookies, raw brownies or even just a fruit plate. Nobody in the world is going to turn down more food at their gathering, and this way you have a healthier alternative available.

Sneak in some low key exercise

Let’s be real, nobody is dragging their ass to the gym in December. December is the calm before the storm for the gym-goer stampede in January! This doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in some subtle exercise here and there. Find excuses to walk more- take your kids out to look at Christmas lights, do laps around the mall or farmers market, or walk to do simple errands if possible. You could also take the stairs more often, and do some gentle yoga to calm your fucking zen before the Christmas chaos.

Get a handle on your anxiety

This one is difficult I give you that, but try and remember that you are a grown up! You have far more power than you think during the holidays when it comes to obligations. The ability to say no is a skill that should be nurtured and used for the good of your overall mental wellness. If something is stressing you out try to sort out why, and triage which things are important.

If you fall of the healthy living strugglebus then suck it up and move on

Take it from me, I have had so many “slips ups” that left me feeling defeated and turned into years long binges and shameparties. If you don’t stick to your healthy living goals during the holidays then own that shit, take a deep breath and move on. Life is too short and you are doing more damage by getting weird about it.

This is a post with good information to stay healthy through this busy season! I find it helps me so much to stick to my routine of exercising and then I don’t fall off track as much but with all the gatherings there is always so much good food. 🙂

I like the advice to bring your own healthy plate to the party! And the quote “life’s too short to be weird about food.” I should report that to myself more often!

We traveled to visit family last week and this article would have been great to read beforehand! I always struggle with consistently eating well when visiting family. This is a great reminder that I’m an adult, I have more power than I give myself credit for, and to not be weird about food (I love that and might have to print it hang at my desk!) 😉

I love this! It’s so hard for me to try to stay healthy during the holidays, especially when you see all of your favorite meals cooked. But I definitely try to keep the sweets at a minimum or eat healthier on a daily so that I can indulge on the day of the holidays!
